Awards Criteria
The Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators (CAMA) invites towns and cities, municipal unions, workplace learning committees, teachers and partners in workplace learning programs to apply for our Awards of Excellence. The awards will be presented during CAMA’s Annual Conference in Toronto, Ontario on June 1, 2010.
What are the awards for?
The awards will celebrate the efforts that outstanding people and organizations have made to municipal workplace learning and literacy programs1. Awards will be presented in five categories:
- Learner Achievement: This award is for learners who have shown a strong commitment to literacy and learning. If you apply or if you nominate someone in this category, please answer all these questions.
- What life challenges did the learner have to overcome in order to succeed in the workplace learning program?
- How has the program helped the learner in the workplace, at home and in the community?
- What are the learner’s goals for the future? Is the learner committed to achieving a GED diploma or equivalent credentials?
- Organizational commitment to creating a positive learning culture for all employees: This award will honour municipalities that have shown leadership by promoting lifelong learning in the workplace for a period of two years or more. If you apply or if you nominate an organization, please answer the following questions.
- How has the municipality continued to show its commitment to developing a learning culture that includes all employees?
- What is the learning philosophy of the organization?
- What are the performance indicators used? How was the program set up? What did it do? What impacts have you seen?
- Why does this organization deserve to receive this award?
- Recognition of educators, practitioners or organizations: This award will recognize the efforts of educators, practitioners, or organizations who have demonstrated their commitment to workplace learning and literacy programs and their learners. If you apply or if you nominate someone, please answer these questions.
- How did they demonstrate unique qualities or create innovative initiatives?
- What were the impacts of their initiative or commitment?
- How did they share or communicate their achievements with other colleagues or municipalities?
- Why should this person or organization receive this award?
- Why should this program (or the people involved in it) receive this award?
- Development of effective and successful partnerships for workplace learning, clear language and e-learning: This award will be given to proven partnerships. The partners may be unions and management, a community college and a municipality, a workplace learning committee and a local literacy group, etc. Any partnership that has planned and delivered a successful workplace learning/literacy, clear language and e-learning program may be nominated. If you apply or if you nominate a partnership, please ensure your submission answers these questions.
- Who are the partners?
- Why did they decide to work together?
- What did each of them do to make the workplace learning/literacy, clear language, e-learning program successful?
- What were the impacts of the partnership?
- Why should this partnership receive this award?
- Recognition of workplace learning/literacy, clear language and/or e-learning initiatives: This award will recognize the leadership and efforts of municipal workplace learning/literacy, clear language and/or e-learning initiatives, that have been in place for a minimum of one year. If you apply, or if you nominate a municipal program, please answer these questions.
- What was the reason for planning a workplace literacy/learning, clear language, and/or e-learning program?
- What partners (municipal stakeholders and community) are in your committee?
- What goals did you set?
- Did you do a needs assessment to help guide the format of the workplace literacy/learning, clear language and/or e-learning program/policy?
- What does the program/policy include?
- When did you begin the initiative?
How to apply for an award
- You may apply on your own behalf or you may nominate someone else for an award. You can apply for two awards with one being for the ‘Learner Achievement’ category.
- Please send your type written application(s) to CAMA, and include a copy on a disk. Each application must be no more than two (2) typed pages. Clearly state the name of the category and make sure you answer all the questions in the category description (see above). An e-mail/fax copy will be accepted as long as the original arrives within five (5) business days.
- Applications must include two (2) letters of support (e.g. from your town or city, from a municipal union or from a partner in the workplace learning program).
- To be considered, your application must be received by or postmarked March 12, 2010. Send your application to:
